Berkhamsted 1 vs Melbourn 1 (28th May 2025)

Melbourn won 12-3

Week 4 of the summer league saw a strong Melbourn side make the trip down to Berkhamsted.

Leading the way for the visitors was Sofia Aveiro-Pita (1), who was taking advantage of an opportunity to get used to club and courts ahead of a PSA Challenger event at Berko (the Berkhamsted Open) on the weekend [Sofia, seeded 3, was to make her seeding by reaching the Semis of that before losing to #2 Olivia Besant]. This tune up went well for Sofia as she saw off Mark Shattock 3-0 (15-12, 15-9, 15-11).

With Sofia playing lift sharing arrangements also meant we had Jason Burgon was also on the Melbourn side. He would be involved in the match of the evening, an absolute epic that went to a tie-break fifth… and at PAR-15 to boot. Ouch. Can we start each game at 4-4 next time?!? Jason’s opponent was Richard Carr, and the pair played themselves to a near standstill before Jase came through 15-7, 12-15, 9-15, 15-13, 17-15. Lots of lactic in those legs the following morning, I’m sure.

That meant Miles Jeanneret (3) and Jack Carr were playing only for pride – not where 3rd strings normally find themselves. This was still motivation enough for a good game of Squash though, Miles establishing a two game lead and then bouncing back from a slight dip in the third to win 15-10, 15-11, 7-15, 15-6.

Overall an excellent 12-3 win for the team, who continue to battle at the right end of the table.
